Ding Daoheng

Ding Daoheng (1899-1955), styled himself as “Zhong Liang”,was born in Zhijin county.

 

In his juvenile, Ding attended old-style private school. After finished his study in Guiyang provincial model high school in 1919,he was admitted to a section A preparatory course in Beijing University and in 1921 ascended to the undergraduate in Department of Geology. In 1926,he was assigned to work at his alma mater after graduation with excellent grades as a teaching assistant, engaging in the research of geological paleontology. In 1927, he went to investigate with the Northwest scientific expedition the geological ancient living things and minerals.The task was completed in three years and Baiyunebo iron ore was found for the first time during the investigation, leaving a very precious means for the development of our country. In October 1930, he went back to Beijing University to be a teaching assistant and the next year from March to August he held a concurrent post in Beijing women’s normal college as a lecturer. In August 1934, he studied abroad in Geology Department of Berlin University in Germany, majoring in geological structure. In 1935, he transferred to Marburg University in Germany to study the fossils of invertebrates. After receiving a doctoral degree, he was appointed as a member of the Royal Society. In December,1937, he served as Engenheiro of Construction Department of Yunnan Province. From September, 1939 to March,1940, he invested the areas around Sichuan and Xikang on the field trips with Chuan-Kang Scientific expedition. In March,1940 he was employed by Wuhan University as a professor in Department of mining and metallurgy. In August,1942, Ding went back to Guizhou, demonstrably aiming to develop education to cultivate talents in his hometown.He founded an institute of workers and peasants with industrial vocational school as an attached institution in Anshun and he himself served as the president.After the institute moved to Guiyang, reorganize integrate into the engineering institute of Guizhou University and Ding also served as the president. In 1948,Ding was elected the professoriate chairman of Guizhou University. After the liberation of Guiyang, he served as chairman of the taking-over board of Guizhou University and was elected member of the People’s Committee of Guizhou Province. After the Southwest Military and Political Committee was set up, he served as the councilor, holding a concurrent post as the deputy director head of the culture and education committee. In December,1952, he served as the director and professor in Department of geology of Chongqing University. In 1953, he was elected deputy of the first session of the People’s Congress Council of Chongqing, member of the standing committee of the CPPCC of Chongqing, and member of Central Committee of Jiu San Society, holding concurrent posts as member of the Society of Chongqing branch and deputy director of Chongqing branch of the geological society committee. In 1954, he was elected deputy of the first session of NPC. On February 21, 1955,he died in Chongqing when he was 55 years old and was buried on the top of Pingdingshan mountain in Xiaolongkan of Chongqing.
